It became the home of one of our Discoverers and home to different foreign communities that settled in Madeira. Religion has always played a very important role in the lives of Portuguese people and various religious orders settled in Madeira as well to bring comfort to the Catholic souls of the Island. The Privateer Attack on Madeira in 1566 shaped our history profoundly as it was only after this event that the defence of Funchal was planned.
